This month, we’d like to share a celebration and inspiring story that embodies our motto, “Let’s start building!”, with our #BAPFamily.
We are celebrating one of the many wonderful experiences we have witnessed as a result of our work as a non-profit. Our students come from diverse backgrounds, and at Building A Purpose, we focus on their interests and help pave the way for a promising future by connecting them with professionals in their chosen fields.
Nadia Briones, a graduate from South San Antonio High School (Ranked #4), Building A Purpose Mentee (Class of 2019), and recipient of the Be Scholarship, exemplifies hard work and determination in overcoming the challenges that many #BAPStudents encounter on their journey to success. As a first-generation American and graduate, Nadia juggled three jobs while attending the esteemed Ohio State University. She graduated in May 2024 with a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training and a minor in Spanish.
Nadia shares her journey with #BAPFamily, from her time as a Freshman BAP Student to becoming a First-Generation College Graduate. Originally interested in becoming a doctor, Nadia discovered during her four years in High School as an athletic student trainer that it laid the foundation for her career path in college. She credits BAP as “a tremendous source of support in high school as they helped me explore different career paths and colleges that were best for me. As mentors, they were always there, offering words of encouragement and motivation, contributing to my professional and personal growth.”
Throughout her college years, she faced significant challenges and hardships that could have deterred anyone. However, her resilience aided her in completing her undergraduate degree successfully. Now, having earned her BS, she has set her sights on another personal development goal: Graduate school, where she aims to start her first semester just three months after obtaining her BS.
Nadia emphasizes that the connections and experiences she gained through BAP are “Invaluable” and acknowledges that the BE Scholarship was instrumental at the beginning of her college journey. She speaks about her transition from mentee to mentor and the continued development that followed her success and growth.
Lastly, she leaves the #BAPFamily with these parting words: “As a Southside native, I am passionate about demonstrating that our backgrounds do not limit our capabilities. I aim to foster a culture of empowerment and positivity in the Southside community to ensure future generations are equipped to succeed. By participating with Building A Purpose, these opportunities will be beneficial for your future. Whether through job connections, advice, or scholarships, Building A Purpose was created by people who were sitting in your seats, and they will continue to advocate for you every step of the way.”
We take pride in our community, our culture, and, most importantly, our students who shape the future. Nadia is an extraordinary example of why BAP continues to strive to provide students with equitable opportunities. We want to celebrate Nadia for her accomplishments and perseverance!
Thank you for sharing these past eight years with BAP and allowing us to witness your application of “Let’s start building.”
