The Work Between the Milestones

Some of the most important work happens after the crowd goes home.

After another successful Old South San Antonio Parade, July gave Building A Purpose a moment to pause, not to stop, but to reflect. We looked back at the people who filled the streets, the organizations that showed up for our community, the volunteers who gave their time, and the families who helped breathe new life into a South San Antonio tradition.

The parade is more than one day on the calendar. It is a bridge between generations.

It reminds longtime residents of the community they helped build while showing young people that their neighborhood, their history, and their dreams are worth celebrating. With the second annual revival behind us, we began laying the groundwork for the parade’s next chapter.

That work includes reviewing what went well, identifying areas where we can grow, strengthening relationships with sponsors and community partners, and continuing the year-round work required to bring people together.

At the same time, we continued building from our home at the Rendon Entrepreneurial Center.

Located inside a former Southcross post office, the 7,000-square-foot REC represents what can happen when an overlooked space is reimagined with purpose. It is becoming a place where mentorship, education, entrepreneurship, cultural events, and community gatherings can all live under one roof.

Summer may appear quieter from the outside, but inside BAP, we were preparing for the school year ahead. We continued planning for the College Professional Connection Program, BAP Saturday, the Guest Speaker Connection Program, scholarship resources, career exploration, and opportunities that connect students directly with professionals.

At Building A Purpose, we understand that success is rarely built in one large moment. It is built through conversations, applications, planning meetings, volunteer hours, introductions, and people who continue showing up.

Some building blocks are easy to see.

Others are laid quietly, long before anyone sees what they will become.

July was a month for those quieter blocks and they are helping us build something strong.

Closing call to action:
Professionals, businesses, educators, alumni, and neighbors are invited to build with us. Whether you volunteer, mentor, speak to students, sponsor a program, or share our mission, your involvement can become part of a young person’s foundation.
