Born in housing project on San Antonio’s west side; raised in Hispanic community on south side; attended high school considered worst in San Antonio at the time with 50% drop out rate; graduated University of Texas at Austin in 1976 with Bachelor of Journalism; peaked in broadcasting career as producer of 11 PM news at WABC TV New York City (audience each night ranged from two to twelve million viewers; switched careers to run for U. S. Congress in 1992 and won by largest margin of victory against any incumbent in entire country that year; served in Congress for 14 years as member of Appropriations Committee which oversaw entire federal budget each year; served on Steering Committee for George W. Bush Presidential Campaign in 2000; co-chaired Republican National Conventions in 2000 and 2004; nominated to be U. S. Ambassador to the Organization of American States in 2007; currently consultant/federal lobbyist with The Normandy Group, Washington DC; wife Sheryl; two children, Alicia & Austin
