A role that symbolizes leadership, community pride, and service, the Grand Marshal is someone who has made a significant and lasting impact on the community. Mr. Elias exemplifies all of these qualities, and his life’s work continues to inspire and uplift those around him.

What Does It Mean to Be a Grand Marshal?

Being named Grand Marshal is not only an honor but also a recognition of an individual’s exceptional contributions to the community. As the ceremonial leader of the parade, the Grand Marshal represents the spirit, values, and unity of the people. It’s a role that goes beyond the festivities—it’s about recognizing a lifetime of dedication, service, and leadership. Mr. Elias is the perfect example of these qualities, having dedicated his life to both education and service to others.

A Legacy of Strength, Love, and Unwavering Support

Mr. Juan Elias’s journey began in the heart of South San Antonio, where he was raised as the third of nine children in a family that, though uneducated, was deeply grounded in the principles of hard work and perseverance. His parents, though without formal schooling, imparted invaluable lessons of grit and resilience. The guiding force behind his success was his mother, whose boundless love and unwavering support inspired him to overcome challenges and reach for a future far beyond his circumstances.

In 1970, driven by a deep sense of duty, Mr. Elias volunteered for the Marine Corps, dedicating three years of active service, including a year in Vietnam. His time in the military not only shaped his character but also ignited a lifelong passion for serving others, a commitment that would become the cornerstone of his life’s work.

Upon his return, Mr. Elias embraced a new challenge—education. But this wasn’t just a personal goal. His wife, Mrs. Olga Elias, played an instrumental role in his academic journey. In 1993, she encouraged him to pursue a teaching degree at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), making him the first in his family to achieve a college degree. This pivotal moment, fueled by his wife’s steadfast love and encouragement, would transform his life and, in turn, the lives of thousands of students he would later inspire. Beyond being an educator, Mr. Elias became a beacon of mentorship and an exemplary male role model, showing that with hard work and determination, anyone can defy their beginnings and change their destiny.

Together, Mr. and Mrs. Elias raised a family that stands as a testament to their shared values of hard work, love, and leadership. Mr. Elias has become a pillar of service, mentorship, and empowerment in South San Antonio. Through his lifelong commitment to education and community, he has impacted countless lives, continuing to spread their legacy of love, guidance, and strength for generations to come.

A Founding Leader of Building A Purpose

Not only has Mr. Elias dedicated his career to education and service, but he has also played a pivotal role in the growth and success of Building A Purpose (BAP). He was the first Board Member of BAP, serving as its President and shaping the organization’s mission to uplift and empower the youth of South San Antonio. His passion for the community and his commitment to providing mentorship and resources for the next generation continue to be a driving force within BAP.

Even after his retirement, Mr. Elias has remained deeply involved with the BAP family, continuing to volunteer his time and expertise to ensure the success of future generations. His leadership both in the classroom and within the community serves as a model for others to follow.

A Legacy of Empowerment, Service, and Leadership

As a Grand Marshal, Mr. Elias is more than just a ceremonial figure—he represents the values of service, dedication, and community pride.
